The Gunners did emerge fighting for the second half as veteran Van Der Sar made an excellent double save from Koscielny, but on the breakaway Wayne Rooney headed home another rebounded effort from Hernandez to provide the hosts an appropriate 2-0 lead on 49 minutes.
As Arsenal pushed forward looking for an objective they left themselves vulnerable in defence and they nearly conceded a next goal as Almunia saved from Hernandez. Which also saw Djourou injuring his shoulder in the scramble to clear the ball.
